I’m originally from the East Coast. Summers as a child were filled with New England beach breaks, steamer clams, lobster boils, and fish fry (or fish and chips depending on who you talk to) served on paper plates in the sand on Fridays. Now as a Central Oregon transplant, I’m thankful for all of the brewpubs and restaurants that do fish and chips really well. I can satisfy my craving for lightly battered, thick and juicy fish filets with a healthy dose of tartar and malt vinegar. On Friday, or any day during the summer, with a refreshing microbrew or two. I might not have the ocean air and sand, but the Cascade Mountain views and microbrews more than make up for it!

The Apocalypse Fish & Chips at 10 Barrel Brewing Company is one of my favorites. You get a half-pound of wild Alaskan cod lightly battered with house IPA tempura. It is served with NW chipotle slaw, house tarter and shoestring fries. I can’t say enough about the house tarter sauce—I love it on the fish, on the fries, on a sandwich made at home with the leftovers; it’s perfectly seasoned and so delicious.

Crossings Restaurant at the Riverhouse just premiered a new lighter batter recipe on their Fish & Chips using Mirror Pond Ale. You get the light breaded feel, with all of the flavor and crunch of a batter. No digging for fish! The beautiful white fresh Alaskan cod is not hard to find and the flavor is really all about the fish. Fish and chips on Crossings’ glorious deck overlooking one of the most beautiful stretches of the Deschutes River in the full sunshine—almost as good as being at the beach!

In the Old Mill District, you’ll find Anthony’s Homeport Alaska True Cod ‘n Chips and award-winning light tempura batter. The dish is available on their Sunset Menu, where for $19.95 M-F until 6pm you get four courses including an appetizer (shrimp cocktail or wild salmon croccantini), Anthony’s Clam Chowder or salad, and dessert. Fish and chips and chowder? Oh yeah. Wicked. Watch the sun go down behind the Three Sisters, see paddle boarders glide along the Deschutes River, relax on one of the best patios in the Old Mill District.

Central Oregon is a ways away from the sea and salt air, but we sure know how to do Fish and Chips right.
