South Sister Summit a Worthy Challenge

South Sister from Green Lakes2

It’s a question a lot of people ask when they come in to the Central Oregon Visitors Association office: How hard is the South Sister hike?

And that’s a tough question to answer because the challenge is a little different for everyone. What I can tell you is that children can do it and the elderly can do it – but it’s certainly not easy and it takes a very long time. And while there are several other “easier” Central Oregon hikes in the South Sister area, there’s something to be said for hiking to the summit of one of Oregon’s iconic peaks.

Zach Urness, an outdoor writer for the Salem Statesman Journal, does a pretty good job of describing the hike in his story, “Oregon’s Beginner-Friendly Mountain a Grueling Adventure.”
