Tetherow Golf Couples Retreat
This perfect couples golf itinerary uses a true legendary course as your base camp for three days of golf interrupted only by fine food, drink, and laughs.
The brand new lodges opened 2015, putting the finishing touches on what’s become one of the most popular golf destinations in the world. That’s right – world.
Golf magazine named Tetherow the “No. 1 new course you can play”, when it opened in the summer of 2008, and it’s become a fixture on “best of” lists in nearly every golf publication.
After the short drive from the Redmond Airport to Bend, drinks at The Row – Tetherow’s own pub and grill – are the perfect way to get over that rough hour and a half flight before venturing into town for dinner.
Downtown, 900 Wall is the restaurant of choice, a local’s favorite for a diverse selection of modern American with just enough of an Italian and French vibe to call the joint “global.” (For dessert, go French with the powdered sugar beignets with raspberry and chocolate sauces and vanilla mousse.)
On Saturday morning, the day starts with breakfast at The Row – maybe the optimistically named “Hole in One Breakfast?” before a few swings at the expansive practice area. The cool morning Central Oregon is known for quickly gives way to warm sunshine as you meet your forecaddie for the day.
Tetherow is the one of only a couple Central Oregon course that offers such a service – and truth be told, it’s the only one that needs it. They’re walking, talking yardage books that know the course – and after just a couple of swings, your game – inside and out.
Tetherow is as challenging – but fair – as it is unique. It’s a true links test with wide rolling fairways and knobs and knolls and lava rock that send your ball wayward as often as they send it exactly where you want it to go.
Any round here is memorable – and sharing the day with your close friends only adds to the memories. And as is the case in Central Oregon, sometimes the amazing golf is just the beginning.
After your round, it’s just a 20-minute drive up the road to Mt. Bachelor, the region’s largest ski area. While the active volcano is still mostly covered with remnants of winter’s snow, the ski season has given way to scenic chairlift rides and sunset dinners in the clouds at 7,000 feet.
You wake up Sunday preparing for a true golfer’s dream – 36 holes at Black Butte Ranch, just 36 miles northwest of Bend. Along the way, a quick breakfast stop at Sisters Bakery offers a necessary introduction to an Oregon favorite – Marionberry scones.
At Black Butte, you’re treated to perhaps the region’s best-kept secret – both of them. The Glaze Meadow and Big Meadow courses offer two distinct rounds of golf in a true mountain setting.
Like with many of the courses in Central Oregon, the most unique feature of these courses in the mountain views. Standing in the shadows of Aspen trees and Ponderosa pines, the only thing you’ll regret about playing Black Butte Ranch in the summer is that you’re missing out on the spectacular fall colors.
The two rounds bookmark a delightful lunch and a mid-round beer at Robert’s Pub inside the Meadows course clubhouse before heading back to Tetherow.
Tonight you’ll stay in for dinner at the Tetherow Grill, sticking with the Oregon red wine you had the first night, but being a little more adventurous at dinner, choosing the bison and prosciutto meatballs.
The morning starts with a beautiful trail walk along the nearby Deschutes River as it winds its way over lava rocks and submerged logs left over from the region’s more industrial past. There’s plenty of time to grab a coffee and muffin from Starbucks (a little reminder of life back in the city) before heading out for more golf.
Today’s destination is a noon tee time at Pronghorn, just 20 minutes east of Tetherow – and well worth the quick drive.
The Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn is a golfer’s paradise, with unique holes cut through ancient lava outcroppings. The public course provides a minimalist experience with an emphasis on the golf game itself—combining strategy with playability, beautiful transitions, and true putting surfaces. Ancient lava rock ridges and outcroppings intertwine with natural landscaping accenting magnificent views of the Cascade Mountains
Dinner tonight is at 10 Barrel Brewing Company, located in a quaint and growing residential-commercial area just short walk from downtown Bend’s iconic Mirror Pond. Locals and visitors alike flock to the outdoor fire pit for brewpub classics like pizza, fish and chips and a rotating selection of craft beers.
Back “home” at Tetherow, there’s still time for another cocktail on the back patio that overlooks the first hole and practice area and beyond to one more Central Oregon sunset.
