Surf the Turf: GolfBoards a Hit at Local Courses
Central Oregon golf courses are changing the game by changing the way you get around the course.
Tetherow, River’s Edge and Awbrey Glen Golf Club in Bend and Aspen Lakes in Sisters have rolled out the GolfBoard to players looking to add a little excitement to a leisurely sport that could always use some spicing up.
Part surfboard (surf legend Laird Hamilton is a co-founder) part golf cart, the GolfBoard was named “Best New Product” at the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show in April and could be just what the doctor ordered to help boost the number of people playing golf.
It’s truly an exciting way to get from shot to shot, hole to hole. It’s hard to worry about your swing when you’re having so much fun just rolling around the links. More into riding a bike than a skateboard? Check out the new GolfBikes exclusively at Pronghorn Resort.
If you’ve ever snowboarded, skateboarded or surfed you’ll take to the GolfBoard with no trouble at all. If you’ve never done any of those things, you’ll take to the GolfBoard with just a little practice. Tetherow offers new users a quick practice ride next to the driving range before heading out to the course.
Powered by a small trigger on the handle that moves it forward or backward, the boards travel just a little slower than a golf cart. (You can adjust to a slower speed with a push of a button.) Let go of the trigger and the board comes to a stop. The board moves from side to side with the shifting weight of your feet.

It cruises up hills, scrambles over rocky sections and is just a blast on some of the bumps and humps Tethherow’s Scottish links design is known for. The rental boards come with a handle that you hold and attach your clubs to. (It has a drink holder as well.) There are also some available without the handle for more experienced GolfBoarders to use while simply carrying their clubs as if they were walking.
Tetherow was the first golf course in the nation to offer a full fleet – the other local courses have a limited number for players to rent. Tetherow will continue to offer its lodge guests the opportunity to take the boards out for a spin (weather permitting) all winter long on a special area of the course.
GolfBoards is based out of Sisters and courses all over the country are quickly learning this could be the next big thing for the game.
