Year-round recreational destination by Lake Billy Chinook
Twelve miles northeast of Redmond, Crooked River Ranch Golf Course is a gem off the beaten path. Locals, however, have beaten a path her because it’s one of the most scenic and challenging golf courses you’ll ever experience. Built in the middle of the stunning Crooked River Gorge, this Bunny Mason-Goerge Ramey design is only 5,800 yards from the back tees, but the par-71 course is known to be a player’s course with teeth. Crooked River Ranch Golf Course is home to what is arguably the most spectacular golf hole in all of Oregon, the 260-yeard, par-4 5th that veers around the edge of the gorge. The newer back 9 features waterfalls, lakes and arresting views of the deepest gorge in Central Oregon.
Architect: (9) Gene “Bunny” Mason 1974 / (9) Jim Ramey 1996
Crooked River Ranch was developed by Bill Macpherson in 1972 as a destination resort. On November 15, 1973, the first meeting of the Crooked River Ranch Club & Maintenance Association (CRR) was held and a year later the new clubhouse, pool, and the first 9 holes of the golf course were built. In 1980, CRR was re-zoned from recreational to rural/residential, and in 1992, final re-zoning took place – making CRR a residential subdivision.
Crooked River Ranch covers 10,000 acres of rural residential, recreational, and commercial property. Of this 10,000 acres, 9,900 acres are divided into 2,646 privately owned lots. The remaining acres consist of common and community property along with buildings and equipment owned by the Association. The Ranch is divided into 16 phases with individual properties divided into 1, 2, and 5 acre lots. There are also numerious commercial properties and businesses.
Crooked River Ranch Club & Maintenance Association is a non-profit corporation and is now the largest homeowners association in Oregon, with over 5,000 in population. It is considered to be the largest subdivision of its kind – employing over 25 people and utilizing many volunteers to keep owners and guests satisfied during their stay on the Ranch. As with all homeowner associations, dues are collected to assist in maintaining the common properties which the association owns. These common properties include the swimming pool, tennis/pickleball courts, 18-hole golf course, RV Park, MacPherson Park & Pavillion, Panorama Park, baseball field, basketball court, horse arena, and other Ranch amenities – all of which are available to our residents.

Wide Tree Lined Fairways
Honored by Golf Digest as one of “America’s 100 Greatest Courses,” the Crosswater golf course at Sunriver Resort was designed by award-winning architect Bob Cupp. Situated on 600 magnificently scenic acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands, Crosswater is threaded by the gently flowing Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers.
In fact, depending on tee selection the rivers can come into play as often as seven times in a round. The design is traditional heathland style, and the golf course features five tee placements for each hole as well as bent grass fairways and greens. Dining at The Grille is reserved for Crosswater members and their guests, guests of Sunriver Resort, and guests of Club Management.

Eagle Crest features all of the elements that have made Central Oregon a golf Mecca. Blessed with almost 300 days of sunshine per year and nearly year-round golf Eagle Crest offers a longer booking window and flexibility for travelers.
Featuring some of the finest golf in the Northwest, Eagle Crest’s three courses are carved out of an ancient juniper forest nestled at the foot of the majestic Cascades and perched on the rim of the Deschutes River. You will enjoy a view of eight snowcapped cascade peaks as you travel along the sparkling lakes, beautifully tiered greens, and emerald green fairways lined with those ancient unique trees.
The “Original Eagle Crest Course” continues to be a time tested place to play. This course features two distinctly different nines. The front nine for the most part allows the player to swing away and use the driver. The back nine places a high premium on accuracy as holes 10 thru 15 have OB left and right. The key to scoring your best is how well you keep penalty strokes off your card.
Hole #2, the Resort Course’s par 5 signature hole tees off eight stories above the Canyon floor and features a nearly 90 degree dog leg right. This hole begs the question, “how confident are you in your driver?” If your confidence level is high, a good drive should put you in a position to go for the green in two. However, a narrow fairway protected by canyon walls can exact a steep price for errant shots. If your driver isn’t your strong suit, it is better to use the iron you are most comfortable with, play it safe, and try for the green in regulation. It is best to play this hole down the right side, as the green is most accessible from the right.
Features two different 9-hole courses.

The Ridge Course has hosted two Northwest Opens and most recently the 2006 Oregon Open. The Ridge Course is a “drivers dream” with ample landing areas for those who like to hit the long ball while still placing a premium on accuracy. The design features a straight forward and fair layout while providing a worthy challenge to all ability levels. The key to scoring your best lies in negotiating the subtle nuances on the greens.
Hole #12 is the Ridge Course’s signature hole. This par three features elevated tees playing to a slender green and boasts of magnificent views of the Cascades. When playing this hole, beware, OB lurks just left of the cart path. Players often make the mistake of focusing too much on the water hazard and thus bring into play the greater of the two evils, “out of bounds” which lurks just left of the bunker. The twelfth forces players to hit a precise shot as the only bail out option is to lay up significantly short of the green. This hole can provide a challenge to even the top players. It is a Central Oregon must play!

Don’t let the yardage fool you. The Challenge Course at Eagle Crest Resort is a real test where you’ll need an extra-sharp short game and savvy course management skills to have any chance at scoring well. This is definitely not an executive course. In 2006 the Challenge Course was named the Pacific Northwest’s best short course by Links magazine. This appropriately named Par 63 course has “FUN” written all over it! And will provide a “Challenge” for any golfer. Opportunities abound with nine par threes to gun for. This course is perfect for those dreaming of a hole-in-one. The Key to scoring your best is having good distance control on all your approach shots.
With an average playing time of only three and a half hours per round, the Challenge is perfect for those with a busy schedule.

Best Short Course in the Pacific Northwest
One of two lakes that sit within the Newberry Crater stocked with sockeye salmon (Kokanee) and Atlantic salmon. This is a very popular place to fish and camp near La Pine, known for its proximity to trails through lava rocks and waterfalls. Three forest service campgrounds and a resort offer plenty of places to spend the night, but the sites do fill fast during the peak summer months.
Easily one of the most popular of the Cascade Lakes, Elk Lake is truly a four-season destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Located 30 miles south of Bend the lake is home to a resort with a restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, snowmobile rentals and snow cat rides. Lodging is available at the resort or at a 22-site campground on the north end of the lake.
Once the snow falls, the resort turns into a winter wilderness wonderland accessible only by snowmobile or cross country skis (or, you can arrange to have the resort come get you in their snow cat.)
Only one word can describe the experience that you will have at Fly & Field Outfitters . . . .Family. This dream of a family owned and operated fly shop began 20 years ago. The Cook family knew to surround themselves with, passionate, experienced, and above all honest folks that truly love what they do. This “family” attitude is entrenched in every aspect of the business. Whether you are an employee, beginner fly fisher, or a veteran angler, you will be made to feel right at home. So, come and experience it for yourself.
What began as a hunch, an idea, a casual conversation between friends or family: A guided fly-fishing trip in Oregon! And now here you are! So let’s take a minute to get an overview. First, please understand that you need zero equipment to go on a guided trip with us! We supply all the essentials; rod, reel, waders, and boots are included in the cost of every trip we offer. You just need a fishing license and some flies, all of which we can provide at our shop.
It is equally important to understand that you do not need to be an experienced angler to go on a guided trip with Fly & Field Outfitters. We specialize in taking out complete beginners and getting a bent rod in their hand! Here in Central Oregon, we are fortunate to have fly fishing opportunities for people who have quite literally never picked up a rod. Check out our page on the Crooked River. It is less than an hour from our shop and full of eager, native trout and whitefish. If you’ve never fished, this is most likely where we will go. Once there, you’ll realize why!
More experienced anglers might prefer a day on the Fall River for beautiful, difficult to fool spring creek rainbows and browns. Another wonderful option is a drift down the mighty and famous Lower Deschutes for the chunky and brutally strong native Redband rainbows. Our professional river guides are on these waters year ‘round and understand what it takes to connect with fish better than anyone in the business.
Fly & Field’s flagship Oregon Guided Fishing Trip is a multi-day Deschutes Camp adventure on the Lower Deschutes River. This is one of the ultimate fly-fishing experiences you’ll ever embark on. Our guides and “baggers” (they set up camps and prepare meals – basically pamper you to death!) are amongst the most experienced in the business. This is a trip of a lifetime and we work so hard to make sure you’ll remember it forever and yearn to do it again!
Within an hour’s drive from the shop, we have the Cascade Lakes that fish wonderfully from May through October. Depending on your skill level and aspirations, we can take you to a lake where you will have lots of opportunities to catch average-sized trout or a lake where you might encounter the biggest trout of your life! Our stillwater guides have comfortable, purpose-built boats for covering as much water as necessary…in style!
All of our guides are experienced Central Oregon fly fishing anglers. We pride ourselves on being patient, encouraging, and diligent. Each of our waters demands a different approach and we customize our tackle and techniques to ensure you have the best chances of fooling fish. After all, being there is great, hooking fish is even better! Our guides will work flat out from the first cast till last to make sure you have every opportunity available to have a bent rod in your hand and a smile on your face.
Take a few minutes to check out the variety of waters, all located within an hour of Bend, Oregon. We are sure you will find one to your liking. Then take a minute to call the shop at 1-866-800-2812 and let’s talk you through every possibility and every aspect of what your day with us will consist of.
Live the experience with Fly & Field Outfitters!

A volcanic attraction covering over 500 square miles beginning just south of Bend and extending to just south of Sunriver and east of LaPine. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this monument provides a unique opportunity to view the Lava Lands of central Oregon. It’s called a “monument,” but it’s actually a 50,000 acre region of natural wonders including lakes, lava flows and other geologic features unique to our region. Paulina Peak stretches nearly 8,000 feet above sea level and a hike to the top give you a birds-eye view across the High Desert.
Hidden in plain sight, Oregon’s massive Newberry Volcano is the largest volcano in the Cascades volcanic arc and covers an area the size of Rhode Island. Unlike familary cone-shaped Cascades volcanoes, Newberry was built into the shape of a broad shield by repeated eruptions over 400,000 years. About 75,000 years ago a major explosion and collapse event created a large volcanic depression (caldera) at its summit. Newberry last erupted about 1,300 years ago, and present-day hot springs and geologically young lava flows indicate that is could reawaken at any time. Because of its proximity to nearby communities of LaPine, Sunriver and Bend Oregon, frequency and size of past eruptions, and geologic youthfulness, U.S. Geological Survey scientists are working to better understand volcanic activity at Newberry and closely monitor the volcano for signs of unrest.
In November of 1990, Newberry National Volcanic Monument was created within the boundaries of Deschutes National Forest. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this monument provides a unique opportunity to view the Lava Lands of central Oregon.Newberry National Volcanic National Monument includes 50,000+ acres of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. The highest point within the Monument is the summit Paulina Peak (7,985 ft.), showcasing views of the Oregon Cascades and across the High Desert.
It is hard to fathom as you drive through the summit area that you are within a 17 square mile caldera at the summit of a 500 square mile volcano, a volcano that remains very active to this day. Newberry is both seismically and geothermally active. Geologists believe the caldera sits over a shallow magma body only 2 to 5 kilometers deep. Visitors see numerous cinder cones (over 400 throughout the area), miles of basalt flows, as well as rhyolite flows of obsidian.
Lava Lands Visitor Center is the interpretive hub of Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Friendly rangers will help orient you to the Monument using our new 3D topographic map.Visit our state of the art interpretive exhibit on area geologic and cultural history, shop in the Discover Your Northwest Bookstore, view a variety of films scheduled daily, walk the Trail of the Molten Lands and the Trail of the Whispering Pines, picnic under the pines, attend a ranger talk, drive to the top of Lava Butte for a spectacular view of Central Oregon.

Ouzel Guides Make all the Difference
Few river companies put as many resources into training, retraining and certification of their guide staff. Guides new to Ouzel must complete a competitive application and training process (regardless of their previous experience). Once training is complete, a long period of “apprenticeship” is required before being qualified to work. Returning guides are required to attend a 5-day training program where skills are refreshed, company standards re-iterated and new policies and procedures are introduced. Our guide staff are an extremely loyal and tight-knit group of professionals. With little turnover each year Ouzel maintains a high level of experience, tradition and teamwork. The fabulous conditions and wonderfully designed golf holes at Pronghorn’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course are found in a remote 640 acre high desert location outside of Bend, Oregon on ground that was acquired from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The terrain affords lava rock outcroppings that are brilliantly incorporated throughout the design as well as signature views of Mount Bachelor, Broken Top, and Three Sisters volcanoes.
Pronghorn Jack Nicklaus Signature Course delivers a stout test of golf and a great variety of challenges. The signature hole of the Nicklaus course is the 15th, a 543 yard five par. It is simply fantastic with the look and number of outcroppings that shape and characterize this uphill hole. The final prize to this par five is the unobstructed mountain views of Three Sisters; a treasure of a hole to be sure. With a rating and slope of 75.4/144, the Nicklaus course delivers plenty of opportunities to mark a bogey on your card, but none more difficult than the 511 yard par four 6th. If playing uphill into the prevailing summer wind was not enough, a large knob and three pot bunkers in front of the green create a blind approach shot to this fairly circular green. You will have to be long and accurate to reach this green in two, but more than likely you will have to utilize your short game skills to get up and down if you are going to avoid a bogey here.

Spectacular scenery abounds this par-72 course from the majestic Deschutes River to stunning views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson. In addition, River’s Edge Golf Course offers some of the most challenging golf in Central Oregon, including the signature hole, the par-4 6th, with an approach shot to an elevated green fronted by a pond and 25-foot waterfall.
The par-3 16th is also a treat, measuring 216 yards from the back tees with the green 300 feet below. Four sets of tees make this course fun for golfers of all skill levels. If you are looking for gorgeous views and a challenging course, River’s Edge is a must play.
Architect: Robert Muir Graves
River’s Edge Golf Course was designed in two phases beginning in 1987 by the late Robert Muir Graves, whose portfolio also included Big Meadow at Black Butte Ranch and Widgi Creek Golf Club.
Originally conceived as a nine hole golf course, River’s Edge was expanded to 18 holes with the acquisition of the upper half of the property in 1992.
Graves, who also worked extensively in Hawaii and California, was intrigued by the lava rock and the dramatic geology around the Deschutes River and incorporated many of those elements into the design, choosing to build the course into the landscape rather than around it.
While some of those elements have been softened over the years to increase the playability, River’s Edge remains one of the most scenic and challenging courses in Central Oregon. It is the perfect combination of shotmaking and scenery.

Widgi Creek Golf Club is nestled among the giant Ponderosa pines in the Deschutes National Forest, between the snow-capped peaks of the Cascades and the spectacular Deschutes River, and only minutes from a bustling and hip city filled with unique eateries, galleries, shops and more…In the middle of everything that is Central Oregon.
That is where you will find Widgi Creek. That is where you will find 18 golf holes on the top of many visitors and locals “Must Play” lists each year. That is where you will find a challenging 6,900-yard Robert Muir Graves-designed course with tight fairways, undulating greens and some of the best scenery you can imagine on a golf course. And that is where you can find a golf club where friends and families can enjoy relationships that go beyond golf – relationships that last a lifetime.
At just under 7,000 yards from the back tees and 5,000 from the forward tee boxes, Widgi offers a unique and fair challenge to all golfers. What the course might lack in yardage, it makes up for with tight, tree-lined fairways and large, undulating greens. The 653-yard third hole is one of the longest Par 5s in the country and the 216-yard 11th hole is all the Par 3 you can handle.
Widgi Creek also features an expansive practice facility that includes two practice putting greens, a bunker area and natural grass driving range. PGA professionals also are on staff to provide a variety of lesson options to fit any budget. But sometimes the score just does not matter. And contrary to what Mark Twain once said about golf…A round at Widgi Creek is a good walk unspoiled.
