Today, it is home to rainbow trout, mackinaw and brook trout where patient anglers test their luck on shore or by boat, then trade stories by campfire light. Cultus Lake is on the Cascade Scenic Byway and a short drive from Bend, Sunriver and LaPine, Oregon.

A volcanic attraction covering over 500 square miles beginning just south of Bend and extending to just south of Sunriver and east of LaPine. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this monument provides a unique opportunity to view the Lava Lands of central Oregon. It’s called a “monument,” but it’s actually a 50,000 acre region of natural wonders including lakes, lava flows and other geologic features unique to our region. Paulina Peak stretches nearly 8,000 feet above sea level and a hike to the top give you a birds-eye view across the High Desert.
Hidden in plain sight, Oregon’s massive Newberry Volcano is the largest volcano in the Cascades volcanic arc and covers an area the size of Rhode Island. Unlike familary cone-shaped Cascades volcanoes, Newberry was built into the shape of a broad shield by repeated eruptions over 400,000 years. About 75,000 years ago a major explosion and collapse event created a large volcanic depression (caldera) at its summit. Newberry last erupted about 1,300 years ago, and present-day hot springs and geologically young lava flows indicate that is could reawaken at any time. Because of its proximity to nearby communities of LaPine, Sunriver and Bend Oregon, frequency and size of past eruptions, and geologic youthfulness, U.S. Geological Survey scientists are working to better understand volcanic activity at Newberry and closely monitor the volcano for signs of unrest.
In November of 1990, Newberry National Volcanic Monument was created within the boundaries of Deschutes National Forest. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, this monument provides a unique opportunity to view the Lava Lands of central Oregon.Newberry National Volcanic National Monument includes 50,000+ acres of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. The highest point within the Monument is the summit Paulina Peak (7,985 ft.), showcasing views of the Oregon Cascades and across the High Desert.
It is hard to fathom as you drive through the summit area that you are within a 17 square mile caldera at the summit of a 500 square mile volcano, a volcano that remains very active to this day. Newberry is both seismically and geothermally active. Geologists believe the caldera sits over a shallow magma body only 2 to 5 kilometers deep. Visitors see numerous cinder cones (over 400 throughout the area), miles of basalt flows, as well as rhyolite flows of obsidian.
Lava Lands Visitor Center is the interpretive hub of Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Friendly rangers will help orient you to the Monument using our new 3D topographic map.Visit our state of the art interpretive exhibit on area geologic and cultural history, shop in the Discover Your Northwest Bookstore, view a variety of films scheduled daily, walk the Trail of the Molten Lands and the Trail of the Whispering Pines, picnic under the pines, attend a ranger talk, drive to the top of Lava Butte for a spectacular view of Central Oregon.

The Oregon State Park system is one of the most popular in the United States. Every year, we serve an estimated 40 million daytime visitors (5th in the nation), and 2 million campers (8th in the nation). There are 224 state parks, including 55 campgrounds, open on 105,000 acres.
We also manage the Ocean Shore State Recreation Area. Many people reach the ocean shore by parking at a state park, but county and federal parks, businesses and private homes also lead to the ocean shore. No matter how you get there, the ocean shore covers all 362 miles of Oregon’s coast, making it one of the most remarkable public recreation settings in the United States.

Ouzel Guides Make all the Difference
Few river companies put as many resources into training, retraining and certification of their guide staff. Guides new to Ouzel must complete a competitive application and training process (regardless of their previous experience). Once training is complete, a long period of “apprenticeship” is required before being qualified to work. Returning guides are required to attend a 5-day training program where skills are refreshed, company standards re-iterated and new policies and procedures are introduced. Our guide staff are an extremely loyal and tight-knit group of professionals. With little turnover each year Ouzel maintains a high level of experience, tradition and teamwork. Our guides know our rivers, our trips and most importantly, our guests.

Paulina Lake is one of the twin crater lakes in the Newberry Caldera and is open year round. It’s located within the caldera of Newberry Volcano, about 25 miles south of Bend.
The caldera is what’s left after more than 500,000 years of volcanic activity. And unlike most lakes, neither Paulina or East lakes get any water from streams – they’re filled strictly with rain, snowmelt and hot springs. Paulina Lake is about 1,500 acres in size and averages 163 feet deep. But at its deepest point, this popular destination plunges to 250 feet deep. Motorized and non motorized boats are allowed here.

Scenic beauty, camping and water recreation at its finest in the High Desert when you stay at the Prineville Reservoir State Park. Mountain waters flowing out of the Ochoco Mountain Range join to form the Crooked River. The river, confined by its canyon and the Bowman Dam, forms the 15-mile long, 3,000-acre Prineville Reservoir State Park. With two developed campgrounds and numerous primitive camps along its 43-mile shoreline, recreational opportunities are plentiful.
The fishing can be good anytime at Prineville Reservoir State Park. The lake supports rainbow trout, small and largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and crayfish. The trout fishing experience is year-round, with the biggest fish being caught during the winter months either by boat or from the shore. The bass, catfish and crappie fishing is best between May and October.
Other recreational activities include waterskiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking, star gazing and wildlife viewing.
There are numerous year round camping opportunities within the state park on the reservoir. In the developed areas there are deluxe cabins with full amenities, full hook up RV sites and tent sites. Flush toilets and hot showers are also available. For those who like to rough it, there are many primitive drive in and boat in campsites around the reservoir as well.
This oasis in the High Desert is waiting for you so come out and enjoy the fun!
Two campsites and two cabins are accessible to campers with disabilities.
As part of the Crooked River Federal Reclamation Project, the Department of the Interior authorized the construction of Bowman Dam between 1958 and 1961. The project’s purpose was to furnish water for irrigation, flood control and fish and wildlife management. Through the Crook County Court, and a lease from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the land for the park was obtained in 1961. A lease agreement between the Bureau of Reclamation and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department allows the State to manage and maintain the natural resources and recreational uses on the reservoir. Have SHARC Recreation Plus Passes? It provides you with access to the new SROA Boat Launch to park your car and exit/enter the river – Plus, your gear gets FREE EQUIPMENT SHUTTLE SERVICE from the New SROA Marina in Sunriver back to Sunriver ToyHouse. This free shuttle service for your rented hard body items – kayaks, SUPs, canoes, etc. is provided as a courtesy to Sunriver Owners and their Renters in possession of a current SROA Recreation Plus Pass (or owner’s card). If you have inflatables, please deflate them and return them to Sunriver ToyHouse by 5p or between 9-10am the following morning.
No SHARC Passes? No Worries – you can still have lots of fun. Leave a car in the Resort’s main marina parking lot for a flat $15 parking/river exit fee. We can not pick equipment up there, so deflate inflatables for transport and tie down hard body items. If your vehicle can not transport kayaks or SUPs, then you will want to consider the Big River put-in to Harper Bridge take out. This is a really great 3 hour paddle (4.5 hour float).
Only have one car? Borrow a courtesy car to drop your car off at your takeout point. Problem Solved!

The Suttle Lodge & Boathouse is a rustic resort on the shore of Suttle Lake in the Deschutes National Forest near Sisters, Oregon.
The original 15.5-acre property is comprised of a large timber lodge with guest rooms, fully equipped lakeside cabins, rustic camping cabins, and a boathouse restaurant with a dock and provision shop. Versions of this resort have been in continuous operation since the 1930’s. The style is a subversive embrace of the Pacific Northwest campground – a relaxed Cascade forest lodge as imagined by a gently debauched scout troop. The focus is on public social spaces: convivial gathering places grounded in the bounty of Oregon food and drink and geared towards the activities and beauty of a forest lake.
Suttle Lodge & Boathouse is a year-round retreat with a camp-like feel, there will be canoe, kayak and SUP rentals, hiking, fishing, swimming, a beer garden and lawn games, arts-and-crafts workshops, music events, a huge roaring fireplace to read or sip bourbon by; snowshoe and Nordic ski trails, nearby hot springs, and a downhill ski slope- HooDoo is just ten minutes away.
If your are visiting Suttle Lodge & Boathouse, you will find breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Boathouse also serves beer, wine and coffee. We even sell groceries, provisions, souvenirs; boat rentals, kayaks, canoes, and SUPS. We are open from sun up to sun down.
We are a short drive into world-class golf at Black Butte Ranch. There you will find the Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow golf courses, just waiting for you to bring your friends and family and play golf. The nearby town of Sisters sports wild-west store fronts for their main street and down-home hospitality.
