The award-winning author of Halcyon Journey, in Search of the Belted Kingfisher is coming to Sunriver! In order to mark this occasion Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory is doing all things Kingfisher on May 24. We have dedicated this entire day to in-depth exploration and learning about this amazing bird. Join us at the Nature Center throughout the day to participate in fun family activities featuring Kingfisher adaptations.
  • 2-3:30pm: Kid-Friendly Nature Walk - Sevilla Rhoads and her family will be leading a kid-friendly nature walk to look for Kingfishers around Lake Aspen and the Deschutes River. Sevilla will also point out wildlife that shares the Belted Kingfisher’s riparian habitats.

  • 4:30-5:30pm: Belted Kingfisher Bird Walk - author Marina Richie will team up with Sevilla for a longer walk to look and listen for Kingfishers and other birds. Learn cool Kingfisher facts along the way--from their headfirst dives to how they build their nests deep in earthen burrows.

  • 6:00 – 7:00 Twilight Talk and Book Signing - In the evening our Twilight Talk, Belted Kingfishers: Messengers of Wild Waterways will begin. This lecture is available both in person and online only. The in-person event will take place at the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory in our Pozzi building.  Marina Richie will share stories, excerpts, and photos from her award-winning book-- a first-person adventure threading natural history with myth and memoir.
