The Tower Theatre Foundation and KQAK-FM present the 40th anniversary screening of the rock drama film Eddie and the Cruisers on May 24, 2023, followed immediately by a live onstage performance of John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band – the group who actually scored, recorded, sang and took the movie’s entire soundtrack into the Top 10, and the single “On the Dark Side” to #1. The first three rows of seats will be removed for post-movie dancing. Reserved seating tickets are $37 and $47 (+$3 fee), and include the movie, the live concert, and a discount on the band’s new Greatest Hits CD. About “Eddie and the Cruisers” ~ 1983   Rated PG   95 minutes They say rock 'n' roll never dies, but one dark night in 1964, a car goes off a Jersey bridge with troubled rock idol Eddie Wilson (Michael Pare) at the wheel. His body was never found despite a massive search. Twenty years after the lead singer of Eddie and the Cruisers disappeared, the band's songs become hotter than ever. That renewed interest in the band leads television reporter Maggie Foley (Ellen Barkin) to pursue a tantalizing mystery: What if Eddie is still alive? The circumstances surrounding his death are just shadowy enough to make it a distinct possibility. Plus, someone (possibly Eddie?) has been ransacking the home of a surviving band member (Tom Berenger) apparently searching for tapes of the group's visionary, never-released album. As Maggie investigates further, pieces of the puzzle come together – but only until deeper mysteries begin to surface.  —MGM/UA Home Video About John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band The legendary East Coast rock 'n' roll group John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band began their career in 1972 as a Rhode Island bar and New England beach band. They achieved mainstream success in the 1980s with the Eddie & The Cruisers Motion Picture Soundtrack. The film’s director met them and realized they closely resembled the band described in the script. Initially, Cafferty was hired to write just a few songs for the film, but he did such a good job of capturing the feeling and sound of 1960s and 1980s rockers that he was asked to score the entire film. After struggling at the box office, the film became available on HBO in 1984, and the soundtrack album suddenly climbed the charts, selling over three million copies and going triple platinum. Nine months after the film was released in theaters, the movie’s main song, "On the Dark Side,” rose to the number one song in the country on Billboard's Mainstream, Rock, and Heatseeker charts, and #7 on the Hot 100 chart. It topped the MTV video chart for five consecutive weeks. A second single from the film, "Tender Years," peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2016, Rolling Stone ranked the fictional Eddie and the Cruisers #18 in their list of 25 Greatest Movie Bands. The title track from the group's 1985 follow-up album Tough All Over became their second number one single on the Billboard Rock charts and the song “C-I-T-Y” reached the Billboard Top 20. John Cafferty's solo track "Hearts on Fire" was featured in the Sylvester Stallone film Rocky IV and he received his second double-platinum soundtrack award. Over the years Cafferty has placed 35 songs in a variety of major motion pictures, including There's Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber To.
