Volcanic red sand bunkers

At the base of the Three Sisters, Central Oregon’s volcanic peaks, Aspen Lakes Golf Course is a perennial favorite among visitors and locals alike. Located in Sisters Oregon, Aspen Lakes Golf Course is a 7,300-yard W.L. Overdorf design known for being a great test of golf in one of the region’s most breathtaking settings. But be careful in becoming too distracted by the beauty, lakes and ponds come into play on more than half the holes. The perfect bent grass fairways and greens and unique bunkers made of crushed red volcanic rock contrast with the snow-capped peaks that seem to hover right over the course.

Aspen Lakes Golf Course is a privately owned, public golf course in Sisters, Central Oregon.  With the most scenic views, unique red sand bunkers and world-class staff and customer service, whether you are a local or when you visit Central Oregon, we think you’ll agree Aspen Lakes is a don’t miss venue!

The concept for Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters Oregon, began in 1988 when the Cyrus Family acquired a 1,084 acre parcel adjacent to their family farm.  The first nine Aspen Lake golf holes were constructed in 1996 under the watchful eye of World Class golf course architect William Overdorf.  He worked with the existing site to sculpt this incredible mountain view golf course into the existing Central Oregon landscape.  As important natural features were identified during construction, the plans were modified to incorporate them into the golf course rather than destroy the feature.

The second nine Aspen Lakes golf holes were opened in 1999.The signature red sand for the bunkers originated on the Cyrus property.  When it came time to install the bunkers, it was discovered that the “normal” sand that the other central Oregon golf courses use is hauled in from other states.  In looking at alternatives, it was decided that it would be more environmentally friendly to use local materials already in Central Oregon.  Red cinders that occur naturally on the Cyrus property were crushed down to make sand.  The deep red sand creates a visual delight as it contrast with the green grass, blue skies and white, snow covered, mountains that are the Aspen Lakes Golf Course signature.

Individual Wood Campfires are no longer allowed at Big Pines RV Park. As an alternative, a new community fire ring is planned. Propane fire pits will be allowed at your site, conditions permitting. This was a difficult decision, but with the addition of 34 new sites we looked at the impact of the additional fire rings in the park. There is the increased risk and liability of starting a wildfire and we have all seen the news about the pain and suffering that wildfire has brought to the Northwest in recent years. Additionally, we need to be concerned about air quality. Much like sound, smoke is not limited to your campsite.  We hope you understand this change.

Best day hike near Sisters

A symmetrical cinder cone butte located in Deschutes National Forest, northwest of the town of Sisters, Oregon.

A scenic Central Oregon volcanic cone with two fire lookouts

About the Hike: Plunked in the midst of the Central Oregon plateau, Black Butte looks like a misplaced mountain. A steep but view-packed trail climbs 1.9 miles to the panoramic summit, gaining 1,600 feet of elevation. The last portion of this route is difficult enough that it is not generally recommended for hikers with children.

Still, it’s surprising how many kids enjoy the climb because they view it as a challenge.

Difficulty: A moderate, 3.6-mile loop to the headland’s tip gains 900 feet of elevation.

Season: Open July through October.

Getting There: Drive Highway 22 west of Sisters 5.5 miles (or east of Santiam Pass 13.5 miles) to Indian Ford Campground, near milepost 95. Turn north onto paved Green Ridge Road 11. After 3.8 miles, turn left onto gravel Road 1110 for 5.1 miles to a parking area at the road’s end.

Fees: A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park here. The pass costs $5 per day or $30 per season. It can be purchased at a ranger station, an outdoor store or at the trailhead fee box.

Tips: From the trailhead at road’s end, the path climbs steadily through a forest of orange-barked old-growth ponderosa pine. The golf courses of Black Butte Ranch appear as miniature meadows in the forest far below.

After 1.1 mile, the trail crosses a treeless slope that’s white in June with the blooms of serviceberry bushes. Expect other wildflowers, too: big yellow balsamroot, purple larkspur, and red paintbrush.

Next the path climbs sharply – a hot, dusty stretch that disqualifies this hike as an easy trip. The trail gains the butte’s broad, eastern ridge amidst wind-stunted whitebark pines and follows the ridge up to the top.

History: Black Butte’s unusual placement east of the High Cascades makes it ideal as a fire lookout site. In 1910 one of Oregon’s earliest fire detection structures was built here: a simple “squirrel’s nest” platform wedged between two adjacent treetops. That original lookout is gone, but Black Butte has collected a variety of other lookout structures since then: an intact cupola-style building from 1923, the ruins of a collapsed 1934 tower, and a modern 62-foot tower from 1995. In 1980 a one-room log cabin was constructed in Sisters, disassembled, and flown by helicopter to Black Butte’s summit as living quarters for the fire lookout staff.

Geology: As you drive toward the flats of Central Oregon toward this symmetrical volcano, you might well wonder why it erupted here. The more famous High Cascades peaks formed along a fault that has been leaking lava for millions of years. But Black Butte grew along a different, parallel crack to the east. This fault also uplifted Green Ridge’s scarp to the north, leaving the Metolius Valley as a long trough.

Black Butte began to erupt quite recently, perhaps only 20,000 years ago. It quickly built up a 3,000-foot pile of cinders, one of the tallest such cones in the state. The eruption also buried the Metoilius River, creating Black Butte Ranch’s swampy meadows on one side of the mountain and Metolius Springs on the other, where the river now emerges.

One of Oregon's Top Golf Courses to Play

Despite the name, Big Meadow Golf Course at Black Butte Ranch winds its way through a towering ponderosa pine forest. World renowned designer Robert Muir Graves created a masterpiece at Big Meadow. This classic 6,850-yard, par-72 layout tests golfers with dozens of fairway bunkers and immaculate greens. Offering a stunning view of the jagged peak on Three Fingered Jack, the signature 14th hole is one of the most spectacular golf holes anywhere.

The stunning Big Meadow mountain golf course is one of Oregon golfers’ favorites, garnering numerous awards over its 30 plus years, including the 2013 honor by GolfWeek Magazine as one of the “Best Courses You can Play” in Oregon. This straightforward Robert Muir Graves design takes golfers through a scenic journey of the Oregon Cascades. Recently updated in 2007, the course stretches over 7,000 yards from the championship tees and features expansive fairways, sweeping cape and bay bunkers and elevated green complexes to challenge golfers of all skill levels.

Every component of the course is integrated into the spectacular mountain setting of Black Butte Ranch with towering Ponderosa pines and shimmering stands of Aspen trees. The fourteenth hole presents one of the Northwest’s fi nest golf course photography opportunities, providing golfers with a dramatic view of Three Fingered Jack, a jagged volcanic peak rising above the Central Oregon landscape. Golfers and non-golfers alike will enjoy Robert’s Pub inside the Big Meadow Clubhouse, providing a casual dining experience and some of the best views in Central Oregon.

Black Butte Ranch offers instructional golf programs at the practice facilities at Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow golf courses.  Call 888-405-3004 for details.

One of Oregon's Best Courses You Can Play

Black Butte Ranch’s Glaze Meadow, one of two golf courses inside the Resort, was originally designed by Gene “Bunny” Mason in 1982 with narrow Ponderosa Pine lined fairways.  In 2012, a $3.75 million renovation was carried out by architect John Fought. The course now features all new greens and tee complexes and will play longer by more than 400 yards.

Glaze Meadow plays 7,007 yards from the back tees, and the modernization of the design includes five sets of tees on every hole, allowing golfers of all skill levels to enjoy the game. The course features meticulously groomed bluegrass-rye fairways, with gentle hills and hollows surrounding the bent grass greens. The rolling landscape, accented by quaking Aspens, Ponderosa pines and spectacular views of the Cascade peaks, including North Sister and Mt. Washington, provides a sophisticated journey that is as engaging as it is memorable.

Mountain views welcome you upon arrival, and continue to provide peace and tranquility throughout your stay at Black Butte Ranch. The awe-inspiring scenery teamed with our abundant year-round recreation is what makes Black Butte such a special place, and our 120 Ranch vacation homes located throughout the resorts 1800 acres offer the perfect place to settle in and enjoy the Ranch. Guests can select from private lodge rooms, two and three bedroom condos and charming cabins to spacious custom homes—just the place for friends and family retreats and reunions.

All Black Butte Ranch vacation homes are professionally managed, privately owned rental homes and decorated and furnished to the owner’s individual tastes.  Each home provides its own special view including meadow, golf course and expansive mountains, and has easy access to the many amenities sprinkled throughout the Ranch. Guests can search for additional home amenities including pet friendly homes, and homes with a hot tub and air conditioning. Jacobsen & Hardy made an extraordinary site, sprawling the network of canyons.

Jacobsen Hardy made the most of an extraordinary site, routing 18 holes at Brasada Canyons in, across and along the edges of a sprawling network of canyons. This sort of elevation affords golfers long, panoramic views of the snow-capped Cascades. Man-made items tend to get dwarfed here, but the 80-foot-high wooden golf cart trestle which delivers players back to the clubhouse and serves as backdrop to the par-5 finishing hole more than holds its own.

“There is so much to see during a round at Brasada Canyons, it is such a feast for the eyes, that we had to make some strategic decisions about when to create visual drama and when to simply get out of the way”, said Peter Jacobsen, a partner with Jim Hardy in Houston-based Jacobsen Hardy Golf Course Design (www.jacobsenhardy.com). The creative part of our design here was mainly a matter of routing. There are three basic types of holes at Brasada: those that play in the canyons themselves; those that play along their edges at elevation; and those that play off the edges, either into the canyons below or across them to another edge.”

Brasada Canyons Golf Course at Brasada Ranch

Privacy, views, and lighting fast greens are just a few of the recurring accolades. It’s also great for all levels of players with five sets of tees that play 4,722 to 7,295 yards.

Brasada Canyons wishes to maintain the highest standards of traditional golf, which includes proper attire and etiquette. Collared shirts or golf industry apparel must be worn at all times. Denim is not permitted along with athletic apparel.

Glacier-carved extinct Broken Top Volcano

Located 20 miles west of Bend, Oregon featuring a splintered ridge line which its name is derived from.

Broken Top is a volcano that has been eroded by glaciers, exposing the cone. The hike is about 3 miles long, with a 1,400-foot elevation gain, and the summit sits at 9,175 feet.

Dogs are allowed on the trail and there are plenty of opportunities for them to drink water from the stream that runs alongside or nearby the trail throughout the hike.  There is also a small lake at the top which dogs can drink from or swim in.

The trail starts off easy with beautiful views of Mt. Bachelor and the Broken Top Crater from between the trees.  At about .8 of a mile in make sure to stay to the right and continue uphill at the fork.  As you finish climbing the first short uphill stretch the trail crosses the creek and will follow near it throughout the rest of the hike.  The path is packed dirt,  but contains areas of loose rock and sandy slopes, so it can get a little dusty at times.

Bike Oregon.

Cog Wild Bicycle Tours & Shuttles is more than a mountain bike touring company. We are a group of passionate riders, travelers, adventurers, advocates and community members that love sharing the best of Oregon by mountain bike. And like all the best things in life, mountain biking is best enjoyed with friends, so we treat you like our best friends.

We take you deep into the varied and vast ecosystems of wild Oregon – along rushing rivers, around impossibly blue lakes, across sunny, warm meadows, up towering mountains and back down again. We stop to smell the wildflowers along the way. We cool off in crystal clear streams and soak our satisfied muscles in natural hot springs. And we top it all off with thirst-quenching, locally brewed beer and amazing food.

We know. Making a decision about where to go or planning what to do on vacation is not the most fun part, so we take care of the details so you can enjoy your time in the saddle. We find the best places to sleep under towering trees and that picture perfect lunch spot around the next bend in the trail. We can help you decide what local craft beer to try with dinner (so many choices!) That way, all you have to do is enjoy the ride.

Join Cog Wild Bicycle Tours & Shuttles for day tours, multi-day vacations or even a shuttle to the trailhead.

Fine Art Images of Nature & Natural History, Photo Workshops

National Geographic Photographer

Located in the Village at Sunriver, Copeland Gallery features images from Chad Copeland’s assignments around the world. Visit us to discover Copeland’s latest masterworks and sign up for his regular workshops right here in Central Oregon. Come see why Microsoft hired Chad to photograph the images behind Windows 10 and help rebrand one of the largest brands in the world.
The abundance of mountain ranges, lakes and rivers in central Oregon are as inspiring as the community that lives here. Copeland hopes to give back to the community that supports these natural resources by sharing visuals with locals and tourists that come from around the world to enjoy it and support the local economy.  Copeland Gallery contains visual archives captured on assignments for National Geographic and many others to present at Copeland Gallery.  Fine art prints that will be available in limited quantities.
Chad Copeland, the owner of Copeland Gallery, an adventure and natural history photographer, contributing photographer and director to National Geographic, BBC’s Planet Earth series, Men’s Journal and numerous other periodicals and has covered stories around the World.
In 2015 Copeland photographed “People of Action” for Microsoft’s Windows 10 that now live on over 6 billion devices worldwide; guiding the brand’s image.  Microsoft hired Chad because he maintains the foundation of authenticity in his images at first capture so the work between camera to canvas is minimal.  An observers experience of the art represents what was present at the moment the image was captured.
Chad’s love for nature and storytelling has compelled him to share those stories with others from a humble perspective.  His images of nature captures the ever-changing natural history from all corners of the planet.  Home for Chad has always been the Pacific Northwest.

Deepest lake in the USA, short drive from Bend, Oregon.

The blue. You’ll first look at Crater Lake National Park and wonder about the blue. How can a lake be that blue? The short answer is because the deepest lake in the country is filled with 4.6 trillion gallons of some of the purest, clearest water in the world. The longer answer has to do with molecules and other science-stuff. You can learn more about that when you get there – just 90 minutes south of Bend.

Visitors can drive or bicycle around Crater Lake or enjoy one of the many interpretive hikes within the National Park. Pamper yourself with a stay at the rustic Crater Lake lodge. Several campgrounds are also on site, giving you a chance to spread out those views over several days.

And if the views from above aren’t enough, take the one mile hike down to the water’s edge where you can take a dip or fish for trout or salmon.

Come enjoy the awesome beauty and ambiance of the most scenic and enjoyable golf experience in Central Oregon.  A visit to Crooked River Ranch Golf Course provides unmatched views of the Crooked River Gorge, the course perched 400 feet above the river.  The No.5 canyon hole with its “Go for it or go home” attitude makes it easy to see why it is the signature hole.  With its own RV Park, swimming pool, tennis courts, dining and accommodations nearby, it’s a “Great Place to Hang Your Hat”.  Just minutes north of Bend and Redmond, the trip and experience is worth it, leaving no doubt that the Crooked River Ranch Golf Course truly is…”The GEM of Central Oregon”.

Twelve miles northeast of Redmond,  Crooked River Ranch Golf Course is a gem off the beaten path. Locals, however, have beaten a path her because it’s one of the most scenic and challenging golf courses you’ll ever experience. Built-in the middle of the stunning Crooked River Gorge, this Bunny Mason-Goerge Ramey design is only 5,800 yards from the back tees, but the par-71 course is known to be a player’s course with teeth. Crooked River Ranch Golf Course is home to what is arguably the most spectacular golf hole in all of Oregon, the 260-yeard, par-4 5th that veers around the edge of the gorge. The newer back 9 features waterfalls, lakes and arresting views of the deepest gorge in Central Oregon.

Architect: (9) Gene “Bunny” Mason 1974 / (9) Jim Ramey 1996

Crooked River Ranch was developed by Bill Macpherson in 1972 as a destination resort. On November 15, 1973, the first meeting of the Crooked River Ranch Club & Maintenance Association (CRR) was held and a year later the new clubhouse, pool, and the first 9 holes of the golf course were built. In 1980, CRR was re-zoned from recreational to rural/residential, and in 1992, final re-zoning took place – making CRR a residential subdivision.

Crooked River Ranch covers 10,000 acres of rural residential, recreational, and commercial property. Of this 10,000 acres, 9,900 acres are divided into 2,646 privately owned lots. The remaining acres consist of common and community property along with buildings and equipment owned by the Association. The Ranch is divided into 16 phases with individual properties divided into 1, 2, and 5 acre lots. There are also numerious commercial properties and businesses.

Crooked River Ranch Club & Maintenance Association is a non-profit corporation and is now the largest homeowners association in Oregon, with over 5,000 in population. It is considered to be the largest subdivision of its kind – employing over 25 people and utilizing many volunteers to keep owners and guests satisfied during their stay on the Ranch. As with all homeowner associations, dues are collected to assist in maintaining the common properties which the association owns. These common properties include the swimming pool, tennis/pickleball courts, 18-hole golf course, RV Park, MacPherson Park & Pavillion, Panorama Park, baseball field, basketball court, horse arena, and other Ranch amenities – all of which are available to our residents.

Golf Digest named Crosswater Club as one of "America's 100 Greatest Courses."

Honored by Golf Digest as one of “America’s 100 Greatest Courses,” the Crosswater golf course at Sunriver Resort was designed by award-winning architect Bob Cupp. Situated on 600 magnificently scenic acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands, Crosswater is threaded by the gently flowing Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers.

In fact, depending on tee selection the rivers can come into play as often as seven times in a round. The design is traditional heathland style, and the golf course features five tee placements for each hole as well as bent grass fairways and greens. Dining at The Grille is reserved for Crosswater members and their guests, guests of Sunriver Resort, and guests of Club Management.

In the early 19th Century, Cultus Lake was a highly sought destination for early explorers seeking to expand their trade in the fur trade industry. Today, it is home to rainbow trout, mackinaw and brook trout where patient anglers test their luck on shore or by boat, then trade stories by campfire light. Cultus Lake is on the Cascade Scenic Byway and a short drive from Bend, Sunriver and LaPine, Oregon.

The river runs through Sunriver and Bend, Oregon

This National Wild and Scenic designated river begins just south of Bend and ends its 252 mile journey as it empties into the Columbia River.

It’s the most fly casted on, biked along, hiked next to, tubed down, foot dipped in, wedding photographed in front of river in all of Oregon. The meandering waterway might cut back and forth across Central Oregon, but it also brings together the area more than any other natural wonder here. It can be nasty, rapid and awe-inspiring in one spot only to slow to a lazy, welcoming crawl just a mile or two down river. Amazing to look at, but more fun to play with, the Deschutes River is Central Oregon’s pride and joy. French for “River of the Falls”, during the period of fur trading, the Deschutes River winds through Sunriver, Bend, to the mighty Columbia.

A shallow lake with access from Century Drive featuring turquoise colored water and scenic views.  While the fishing here isn’t going to produce any whoppers, casting a line for the rainbow and brook trout are made worthwhile thanks to the views alone.

The lake has a hike-in campground with 11 sites that’s a popular spot for folks to set up shop before hiking South Sister or embarking on any of the other hikes nearby.

Eagle Crest Resort – Resort Course

1522 Cline Falls Rd Redmond OR 97756

Features two different 9-hole courses.

Eagle Crest features all of the elements that have made Central Oregon a golf Mecca. Blessed with almost 300 days of sunshine per year and nearly year-round golf Eagle Crest offers a longer booking window and flexibility for travelers.

Featuring some of the finest golf in the Northwest, Eagle Crest’s three courses are carved out of an ancient juniper forest nestled at the foot of the majestic Cascades and perched on the rim of the Deschutes River. You will enjoy a view of eight snowcapped cascade peaks as you travel along the sparkling lakes, beautifully tiered greens, and emerald green fairways lined with those ancient unique trees.

The Resort Course:

The “Original Eagle Crest Course” continues to be a time tested place to play. This course features two distinctly different nines. The front nine for the most part allows the player to swing away and use the driver. The back nine places a high premium on accuracy as holes 10 thru 15 have OB left and right. The key to scoring your best is how well you keep penalty strokes off your card.

Hole #2, the Resort Course’s par 5 signature hole tees off eight stories above the Canyon floor and features a nearly 90 degree dog leg right. This hole begs the question, “how confident are you in your driver?” If your confidence level is high, a good drive should put you in a position to go for the green in two. However, a narrow fairway protected by canyon walls can exact a steep price for errant shots. If your driver isn’t your strong suit, it is better to use the iron you are most comfortable with, play it safe, and try for the green in regulation. It is best to play this hole down the right side, as the green is most accessible from the right.

A driver's dream

Eagle Crest features all of the elements that have made Central Oregon a golf Mecca. You will enjoy a view of eight snow-capped cascade peaks as you travel along the sparkling lakes, beautifully tiered greens, and emerald green fairways lined with those ancient unique trees.

The Ridge Course has hosted two Northwest Opens and most recently the 2006 Oregon Open. The Ridge Course is a “drivers dream” with ample landing areas for those who like to hit the long ball while still placing a premium on accuracy. The design features a straight forward and fair layout while providing a worthy challenge to all ability levels. The key to scoring your best lies in negotiating the subtle nuances on the greens.

Hole #12 is the Ridge Course’s signature hole. This par three features elevated tees playing to a slender green and boasts of magnificent views of the Cascades. When playing this hole, beware, OB lurks just left of the cart path. Players often make the mistake of focusing too much on the water hazard and thus bring into play the greater of the two evils, “out of bounds” which lurks just left of the bunker. The twelfth forces players to hit a precise shot as the only bail out option is to lay up significantly short of the green. This hole can provide a challenge to even the top players. It is a Central Oregon must play!

Best Short Course in the Pacific Northwest

The Challenge Course:

Don’t let the yardage fool you. The Challenge Course at Eagle Crest Resort is a real test where you’ll need an extra-sharp short game and savvy course management skills to have any chance at scoring well. This is definitely not an executive course. In 2006 the Challenge Course was named the Pacific Northwest’s best short course by Links magazine. This appropriately named Par 63 course has “FUN” written all over it! And will provide a “Challenge” for any golfer. Opportunities abound with nine par threes to gun for. This course is perfect for those dreaming of a hole-in-one. The Key to scoring your best is having good distance control on all your approach shots.

With an average playing time of only three and a half hours per round, the Challenge is perfect for those with a busy schedule.

Camping, fishing, biking, hiking and more!

One of two lakes that sit within the Newberry Crater stocked with sockeye salmon (Kokanee) and Atlantic salmon. This is a very popular place to fish and camp near La Pine, known for its proximity to trails through lava rocks and waterfalls. Three forest service campgrounds and a resort offer plenty of places to spend the night, but the sites do fill fast during the peak summer months.

Camping, cabins, fishing on a beautiful lake in the Newberry Caldera

WELCOME TO EAST LAKE RESORT – “The Unique Oregon Experience”

In 1915, East Lake Resort opened its doors on the shores of East Lake in the caldera of Newberry Volcano – the largest volcano in the Cascade Range. Rebuilt in 1942, our current resort is a full service facility 45 miles southeast of Bend, Oregon. Our remoteness gives you the chance to unplug and unwind  in the heart of one of Central Oregon’s most scenic regions.

Classic cabins, tent sites, RV sites and watercraft (from paddle boards to pontoons and fishing boats) are available for rent. Randy, our experienced central Oregon fishing expert will be available for guided fishing trips on East Lake throughout the 2020 season.  The Blue Duck Grill provides a relaxing atmosphere for a pub style meal. The on-site general store and tackle shop will take care of your last minute camping and fishing needs. The gift shop gives guests an opportunity to shop for a unique gift or clothing item.

The 1050 acre lake, at 6,400 feet altitude, is known as one of the finest lake fisheries in Oregon as featured in BestFishingInAmerica.com.  Brown Trout, Kokanee, and Rainbow Trout are available for harvest throughout the season.  For an up to date fishing report look to our friends at Fly and Field in Bend.

Grant McOmie’s “Travel Oregon” and Brian Jennings “Great Outdoors” travel shows have featured the history, scenery and fishing of the Newberry Caldera and East Lake.

Before you visit East Lake Resort please remember that the resort is located in the beautiful caldera of the Newberry Volcanic Monument. There is very limited cell services and no access to wifi. Our communication with civilization is limited to a 1940’s landline phone service.

Bruce Bronson has owned the resort since March 2014. Bruce’s longtime business partner, Rob has retired to Arizona, but no worries as he will be making appearances at the resort throughout the season. The 2020 season will be managed by Chris and Anna Bronson.  We welcome you to spend a few hours or a few days enjoying the unique Oregon experience.

East lake resort is located off Hwy 97 in Central Oregon, 22 miles south of Bend. Turn east on East Lake – Paulina Lake Road (County Road 21). Drive 18 paved miles to East Lake Resort.

Scenic & Historic State Park

Fort Rock State Park – Like a desert mirage, this National Natural Landmark rises huge out of the barren, immense flatness of Oregon’s high desert. An enormous near-circle of towering jagged rock walls make it seem like a fort. Hike around and you’ll soon realize it’s even bigger than it looks! It’s an old tuff ring set in what was a shallow sea in prehistoric times.

The Fort Rock Basin has served as a vital part of the Native American lifestyle. Fort Rock Cave is near Fort Rock State Natural Area, and is the site of an archaeological discovery of several 9,000 to 11,000 year-old sagebrush sandals. This property serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has shaped so much of Oregon’s history.

The story of the Fort Rock Basin is told by the artifacts left behind and by the rich oral tradition of the tribes who claim the area as home. Fort Rock Cave is a National Heritage site and is open only by a state park guided tour.

As you walk around inside, imagine the early American Indians who canoed to and from what was then an island. Sandals found in a nearby cave are the oldest ever discovered, dating back around 9,000-13,000 years.  Guided tours of Fort Rock Cave are available contact LaPine State Park at 541-536-2428 for more information.

Fort Rock State Park is a great hiking area, complete with picnic area, restrooms and information on the history of the region.  While you are visiting, please also check out the nearby ghost town Fort Rock Homestead Village Museum, to see how early settlers lived in this high desert region complete with clothing, buildings from the early 1900’s.    For information on cave tours Click Here.

Hutch’s Bicycles

We offer bike rentals, repair and sales in our three central Oregon locations; Eastside location is at 820 NE 3rd St, the other at 725 NW Columbia just west of Downtown Bend.  The third is located in the heart of Redmond.

Since 1981, we have been Central and Southern Oregon’s #1 mountain, road, city and youth bike shop for custom builds, rentals, sales and service. Stop in and let us show you why we are #1.

Hutch’s Bicycles started in Eugene, Oregon in 1927 by Earl Hutchinson whose nickname was Hutch. Hutch’s was originally a combined bicycle/lawnmower/key making store until the 1960’’s when Earl’s son, Bill took over and changed the name to Hutch’s Bicycle Store.  In 1978, a second store was opened in nearby Springfield, Oregon.

In 1981 a third store took over the Schwinn dealership in Bend, Oregon. Ownership of the Bend store was sold to then longtime Eugene employee, Jim Lewis. Jim worked hard to build the business in Bend, and in 1989 opened another Hutch’s location in Bend, on the popular west side of town.

In 1997, Jim opened a new venture called Rack-n-Roll. It is a stand-alone business specializing in multi-sport automotive rack systems, and is located near the original 3rd Street location, on NE 1st Street in Bend.

In 2010, Hutch’s expanded into Redmond, Oregon to fill the high demand for bike rentals, sales and repair. Jim is still a Hutch’s man, and the official ”Spokes-man” for the Bend, Redmond and Klamath Falls stores.

Year-round, Hutch’s in Bend Redmond and Klamath Falls employs 15 to 20 people who have come to work for us from all around the U.S.A. The Hutch’s family share a common theme: quality of life, great working environment, uncompromising customer satisfaction, and a passion for bicycles

This course offers a challenge for golfers of any skill with four sets of tees.

Juniper Golf Course is taking the Oregon golf community by storm and assuming its place as one of the premier courses in Oregon, the Northwest and the country. One of the most beautiful spots carved from the Central Oregon desert nestled on a beautiful piece of land in Redmond, The Hub of Central Oregon, with panoramic views of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top, the Three Sisters, Mt. Washington, Three-fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood, Juniper challenges you from your first tee shot to your last putt.

A true championship course designed by esteemed golf course architect John Harbottle, Juniper Golf Course was host of the 2007 and 2010 Oregon Open and a repeat US Amateur qualifier site for six consecutive years, 2006-2011. However, the variety of tees available makes it playable for golfers of all skill levels. Do yourself a favor and plan a trip to Central Oregon and book a tee time at a course that you will be raving about when you finish and dying to get back on again soon.

Juniper Golf Course in the town of Redmond has quickly made a name for itself as one of the best courses in the state. Home to numerous local and regional championship events, the course has also hosted the Oregon Open multiple times.

The John Harbottle III-designed layout is carved from a landscape of native juniper trees and lava rock outcroppings, resulting in a 7,200-yard course that, when the wind blows, is one of the toughest tests in the region.  Juniper Golf Course‘s immaculate greens have a reputation for being among the best in the area, and with Central Oregon’s unique weather, the course is often open 12 months a year.

Architect: John Harbottle

Juniper Golf Course is a publicly-owned golf course located in the Central Oregon community of Redmond, Oregon.

Our mission is to provide an outstanding venue and exceptional customer service so our patrons may enjoy an affordable high desert golf experience, good food, and great fun.

Hike the Tam-a-lau trail, swim, water ski or rent a houseboat at Lake Billy Chinook’s Cove Palisades State Park Marina. Lake Billy Chinook Houseboats are the perfect way to enjoy beautiful sunny Central Oregon, just three hours from Portland, with 75 miles of shoreline, lots of sun and a variety of fish including Kokanee, Bull Trout, Small Mouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, and German Browns.

Just 45 minutes North of Bend and located in the heart of sunny Central Oregon lies the houseboating, water skiing and fishing mecca known as Lake Billy Chinook. Fed by the Deschutes, Crooked and Metolius Rivers, Lake Billy Chinook is always full in the summer and offers three unique arms and over seventy two miles of shoreline. Cascade Mountain Vistas, basalt spires, soaring bald eagles and the steep canyon walls will awe you. Rent a Lake Billy Chinook Houseboat today and bring your family and friends for a memorable vacation.

Since fishing season on most water bodies starts in late April, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any other opportunities out there before then. Lake Billy Chinook, also referred to as Round Butte, is open year round. The Metolius arm of the river opens March 1. March and April is when anglers go after large bull trout. The largest bull trout taken at the reservoir was more than 23 pounds, which is a State record.

The interpretive hub for the Newberry National Volcanic Monument located at the base of Lava Butte. The visitor center includes a bookstore, educational films, a 3D map of the area and rangers on hand ready and willing to talk to about the geological wonders of Lava Lands and the expansive monument.

Right outside the visitor center, enjoy a self-guided tour of the 7,000 year old lava flow formed by Lava Butte’s eruption. There’s informational plaques throughout, including one that highlights a unique piece of American history: Astronauts trained there in 1966 to prepare for the upcoming moon landings.

You can hike up to the top of the butte for some amazing views of the surrounding area, but be careful because there’s  no trail. You have to walk up the road, which, at times, can be congested.

Lost Tracks Golf Club defines golf with 7,000 yards of breathtaking views.

What will you find at Lost Tracks Golf Club? A perfect Central Oregon rolling terrain fashioned into beautiful golf holes by designer Brian Whitcomb. With 7,000 yards of breathtaking views and challenging golf shots, Lost Tracks Golf Club defines the word golf.

While Lost Tracks Golf Club is located near the city of Bend, Oregon, it has the feeling of quiet seclusion. The golf course is bordered by national forest land and carved out of a stand of Ponderosa and high desert pine trees with lava rock outcroppings, dotted with sparkling lakes and seaside sand-filled bunkers. Laid out on a softly rolling terrain, the old-style design, without the long walks between greens and tees, invites the golfer to walk the meticulously groomed and maintained fairways.

Lost Tracks Golf Club demands the game of golf be played the way it was meant to be played by the game’s founders hundreds of years ago.

Architect: Brian Whitcomb

Golf Memorabilia at Lost Tracks

Former PGA of America President, Brian Whitcomb, is the owner and designer of Lost Tracks Golf Club. In Brian’s tenure as the PGA of America President Brian was lucky to be a part of Golf History throughout the WORLD. When you enter the Lost Tracks Clubhouse you will immediately be immersed in the history of the game of golf. With memorabilia from every Major Golf Event over the past decade, it is truly a golfer’s chance to step “inside the ropes” and see up close and personal what it is like to rub shoulders with the greatest players in the game.

Magnificent views of the Cascade Mountain Range

This 30-mile loop in Jefferson County begins and ends in downtown Madras, but it only takes riders one mile to get out of town and onto peaceful country roads through a rich agriculture area.

The views on this “moderately” strenuous ride are magnificent, with sweeping views of the Cascades, including Mount Hood and Three-Finger jack. You’ll enjoy smooth paved roads with some gravel areas overlooking Cove Palisades State Park and Lake Billy Chinook where wildlife sightings are common. You’ll pass through several small communities, including Culver and Metolius on roads featuring very little traffic. The area’s mild winter makes this a popular ride year round.

The most spectacular ride in Central Oregon

Travel Oregon (rideoregonride.com) calls this ride “without a doubt the most spectacular ride in Central Oregon.” dropping route dotted with the volcanoes that shaped the region’s landscape. Keep a look out for the abundant and diverse wildlife along the way, including bald eagles. Be prepared to take a day or two to partake in any of the number of recreation opportunities on the pass, including fly fishing the McKenzie River and mountain biking a trail system featured regularly in cycling publications worldwide.

Most of the ride is on a scenic byway that is closed during the winter months, but a bonus is that cyclists have access to the road in the spring as the snow melts and before cars are allowed.

The ride is classified as “challenging,” but the out and back is definitely doable in one day.

Set on the beautiful desert highlands of sunny Central Oregon, amidst sparkling blue ponds, rock-rimmed buttes and green meadows, Meadow Lakes features a championship course, a beautiful clubhouse, and a friendly staff eager to make your round of golf an extraordinary experience. Meadow Lakes has been featured in the USA Golf Journal and is one of the first-ever recipients of the Golf Digest National Environmental Leaders Award.

Many other golf courses have been modeled after the project completed by the City of Prineville. Meadow Lakes is an active municipal golf course that has hosted two Oregon Amateur State Championships, including the 1998 Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship. Word has certainly gotten out that this waste-water treatment facility is also a great golf course. Golfers come from all over the Pacific Northwest to play the golf course that they have read and heard so much about. The challenging and enjoyable layout, designed by Bill Robinson, keeps the golfers coming back.

An anglers dream!

One frequent fisherman on the Metolius River may have summed it up best, calling it “The Last Great Place.”

This tributary of the Deschutes River flows north from it’s natural springs origins near Black Butte and is a fly fishing only, all catch and release river.  It might be harder to tell which has it better here, the rainbow, brown and bull trout that thrive in the clear, cold waters or the anglers who call this one of the best places on Earth to cast a fly. Several lodges along the river and nearby fly shops have everything you need to enjoy one of Central Oregon’s jewels.
